2012 Pratt Institute Fashion Show and Fashion Industry Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Hello all! I am extremely excited to tell you about what I was part of on Thursday the 26th! I had the honor and opportunity to attend the 2012 Pratt Institute Fashion Show and live the moment when Fern Mallis received the Pratt Institute Fashion Industry Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event started at 6pm.  The welcome and remarks were presented by Thomas F. Schutte (President of Pratt Institute) and Linda DeFranco (Director of product trend analysis from Cotton Incorporated- the Platinum sponsor of the event).  The Introduction and Award presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award was conducted by designer Calvin Klein.  This was then followed by the recipient of the award, FERN MALLIS.  Fern Mallis is the mastermind behind Fashion Week in New York.  Fern was very grateful and appreciative of the award.  She spoke about her experience running fashion week for 19 years.  She talked about how she loved working alongside mentors and friends, Calvin Klein being one of them.  She then said "Be nice, people will choose to do business with the people who are nice".  This simple comment stuck with me and will always remind me that being nice makes a difference.  This was then followed by the Pratt Institute Fashion Show.  17 students were chosen to show case their design and talent.  I was very impressed by how young they were and how creative and talented they were.  After the Fashion Show, Jennifer Minniti presented the finalists that will compete for a $10,000 cash prize in September at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  The finalists were, Kate Wilkoff and Meredith Lyon.  CONGRATS Kate and Meredith! I hope to see you in September! The final award for the night was the Liz Claiborne Award-Concept to Product.  The recipient of this award was Kelsey Carleen Parkhouse! CONGRATS to you too Kelsey! I wish you all the best!

I must say that even though there were a lot of people at this event, it also felt intimate and personable.  I had the opportunity to meet other bloggers and we then headed over to the Dream Hotel for the cocktail benefit.  Here I had the opportunity to network, take pictures with other bloggers (Lindsay Moore and Helene Abiola), designers, and of course Fern Mallis! I also took this opportunity to speak to Meredith Lyon, Huner Aldemir, and Theresa Deckner.  Awesome girls! with a creative mind and vision.  They were very excited and appreciative for being part of the 17 students/designers chosen out of 38 to participate in this Fashion Show.  Meredith was extremely excited for being one of the finalists to showcase her design and talent at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in September! Congrats to you again Meredith! Her design at the Pratt Institute Fashion Show was very creative and genius.  She incorporated cigarettes to her design and designed everything from jackets, dresses, shorts, pants, and tops.
